First Release of the 2009 BCS Standings

October 18, 2009

The BCS is finally out. Florida has a slim hold of the number one spot over Alabama by .03%. Behind Florida and Alabama are the quickly dropping Texas Longhorns. Despite playing poorly the last few weeks, the Longhorns have found ways to win and stay undefeated. Being at the No. 3 spot in the BCS is the perfect place to be at this point and the perfect place to stay because Florida and Alabama will cancel each other out when they meet in the SEC Championship Game guaranteeing the number 3 team a spot in the Top 2 and the BCS National Championship Game.

Below Texas at Number 4 is somewhat a surprise in Boise State. Many experts have Boise at 5 or 6, but with their non-conference schedule being above average, the computers were able to give Boise a boost. At 5 is Cincinnati who everyone had already written off preseason. Nobody thought a Big East team would be in the top ten, or even the top five at this point in the season. What would be very interesting is if Florida and Alabama were both to lose, would Boise State get a spot in the national championship game? It seems very likely at this point that in that scenario, they actually would.

With Kansas losing this past weekend to Colorado, they slipped to No. 25 and stand at 25 in the BCS, so there are only 7 undefeated teams left of the 119 FBS schools. The only undefeated team separated from the pack is TCU at No. 8 under the one-loss USC Trojans. All the talk was of Virginia Tech being the best one-loss team in the country, after losing to Georgia Tech last night, now they're the best two-loss team in the country, but have lost any shot at a national title while USC, many projected them to be number 4, needs a little help now to get into the title game. The only teams that really control their own destiny are Florida, Alabama, and Texas.

Rounding out the top ten are Iowa at 7, LSU and Miami at 9 and 10. A national title chance seems like a longshot for LSU or Miami at this point.

The biggest surprise, other than Boise at No. 4, is near the bottom with Wisconsin and Arizona holding spots in the BCS Standings. Wisconsin just lost its second game of the year to Iowa, but Arizona is 4-2 but has played a decent schedule that included a loss to Iowa.

As you look at the Standings and then at the rankings, you will notice that the biggest difference is the absence of a powerhouse: Oklahoma. Oklahoma is at the bottom of the polls, but is no where to be seen in the BCS with a 3-3 record, the latest loss being to Texas. The fact that a team like Oklahoma is not in the BCS equation does come back to hurt Texas in the long run though in terms of strength of schedule even though Oklahoma is by the far the best team in the country with a loss.

But now, without further a due, here's the first release of the 2009 BCS Standings.
